Almonds with their fruity, marzipany, nutty flavor are the edible seeds (often categorized as a nut) of the Prunus dulcis tree native to southwestern Asia, which also grows easily in Mediterranean climates as well as California.

Some call this nutritious superfood “beetroot” powder. Dark and pinkish-red in color, this powder is made from dried and ground organic beets. Beets (Beta vulgaris) have a slightly sweet and earthy flavor and contain pigments called “betalains,” which are responsible for its vibrant color. Beet powder can easily be mixed into many foods, baking recipes, smoothies, or in this case, granolas. The use of beetroot powder dates back to Roman times.

Cacao powder consists of the cocoa beans, which are ground up after their cocoa butter, the fat component, is extracted. This superfood is nourishing and delicious in taste.

Chia seeds are the tiny black seeds of the chia plant (Salvia hispanica). Native to Mexico and Guatemala, they were a staple food for the ancient Aztecs and Mayans. In fact, “chia” is the ancient Mayan word for “strength”. Chia seeds contain fiber, protein, and several essential minerals.
