Posted on May 26, 2021
We recently spent the day with renowned Jiu Jitsu athlete, Isaac Doederlein. This American black belt has won notable titles over the past year and a half from the Brasileiro 2019 to the IBJJF European Championship 2020.
From coaching at UNDEFEATED's Los Angeles gym to life as a father and husband, Isaac knows a thing or two about the power of daily rituals to fuel success.
Hey Isaac! Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do!
My name is Isaac Doederlein. I'm a professional Jiu-Jitsu athlete and also an instructor. I travel the world to compete and I live life doing what I love, which is Jiu-Jitsu.
What does health mean to you?
Health is really important to me for many reasons, but one is performance wise. My goal every day when I'm training and competing is to be the best that I can possibly be, and in order to do that you must feel good physically. Living a healthy lifestyle has given me consistency with my training and has helped me with getting good results in competition. It also leads to longevity, and I want to be around a long time so that I can take care of my family and be around my kids and my grandkids. Providing for them and taking care of them is very important, and in order to do that I have to stay healthy.
What does your morning Daily Ritual look like?
So generally I wake up everyday and if my daughter is awake I'll take care of her, and then I'll grab some coffee and head to the gym where I teach called UACTP UNDEFEATED. Most of the time I'll be there teaching class, and afterwards I will workout or train. We also have a physical therapist there who will help me take care of injuries.
How had being a father changed your approach to life?
One thing that has helped me be more organized and be more efficient has been becoming a father. The time with your family becomes very valuable. You can't cheat that time, you have to make sure every day of the year you're spending time with your family. It has forced me to make sure that the time I have available to me to do my training and studying is used efficiently. I make sure I don't waste any time. Without having a family, you may have more time, but you may spend more time doing random things. For me, becoming a father has made me more efficient with my time to make sure I'm achieving my goals.
What advice to you give to your Jiu-Jitsu students?
One thing I want to pass down to my students, and to really anyone who looks up to me, is that anything is possible. I was very successful in the lower belts of Jiu-Jitsu, so from blue to purple and brown, I had a lot of success at the highest level. When I got to the black belt it was a big shock for me because I was not used to that level of competition. My first two to three years of a black belt in competition, I did well, but I was not winning every single competition. I had to do a lot of grinding to make up for what I was missing to get back into the spotlight. If there is one thing I want to be remembered for is that anything is possible.
Even if you get to a certain point in your career and you feel like everyone else is so high up and it's so far away to get to where you want to be, as long as you stay motivated and you have a good head on your shoulders, anything is possible and you can achieve whatever you want.
What fuels you?
Just the hunger. The hunger to be better. I'm never satisfied with where I am at. I am always hungry for knowledge. For me, I am so in love with my sport that it's not about the result, but my goal is to always strive to be better. Everything else is just icing on the cake.
What have you been liking about Activate Immune Support?
I love the product because it just flows into my daily rituals. I like how easily I can add it to my water every morning to start the day right and help support my immune system. It's so mobile, so I can just throw it into my bag and take it to the gym.
